The architectural concept of the “Eckstein” project at Breite Straße and Scharrenstraße aims to embrace the new building ensemble like a bookend, integrating seamlessly into the historical urban landscape. The building draws on the area’s tradition without claiming state history and presents an elegant yet open, inviting design.

A central theme of the design is the compact structure, which meets both urban planning requirements and economic and ecological goals. The space-optimized organization of the building allows for efficient use of space and flexible layouts that can adapt to future tenant needs. This efficiency minimizes unnecessary circulation areas, and ensures easy accessibility.

The facade consists of two layers: an outer brick layer that reflects the historical texture of the surroundings, and a recessed, reflective contemporary inner layer made of aluminum. The depth of the facade grid conceals the outer structure while providing natural sunshade. The glazed tile base emphasizes the main entrance and recalls Schinkel’s Bauakademie, creating a visual link to the historic surroundings. On the rear side, facing the courtyard, the design is more restrained, with smaller facade openings and flush window frames.

Overall, the design combines innovative and sustainable construction methods, such as the hybrid wood-concrete construction, with a deep connection to the historical context. By selecting durable materials, optimizing space and energy use, and ensuring high flexibility in spatial organization, the project not only meets functional requirements but also achieves a high level of sustainability, comfort, and urban identity.
